There were a brother and a sister — Vasya and Katya. They had a cat. In spring the cat disappeared. The children looked for her everywhere, but they could not find her.
One day they were playing near the barn and suddenly heard something meowing above them in thin little voices. Vasya climbed up the ladder under the roof of the barn.
Katya stood below and kept asking: — Did you find her? Did you find her?
But Vasya did not answer. At last he shouted: — I found her! Our cat is here… and she has kittens. They are so wonderful. Come here quickly!
Katya ran home, brought some milk, and gave it to the cat.
There were five kittens. When they grew a little and began to crawl out from the corner where they were born, the children chose one kitten for themselves — a gray one with white paws — and brought it into the house.
Vasya’s and Katya’s mother gave the other kittens away, but this one she left for the children. The children fed the kitten, played with it, and even let it sleep with them.
One day the children went to play on the road and took the kitten with them. The wind was moving the straw on the road, and the kitten played with the straw. The children watched it and laughed.
Then they saw some sorrel near the road. They went to pick it and forgot about the kitten.
Suddenly they heard someone shouting loudly: “Back! Back!”
They saw a hunter riding a horse. In front of him were two dogs that had seen the kitten and were trying to catch him.
But the kitten was foolish. Instead of running away, it crouched down, bent its back, and looked at the dogs.
Katya became frightened, screamed, and ran away. But Vasya ran to the kitten as fast as he could. He reached it at the same time as the dogs.
The dogs wanted to catch the kitten, but Vasya threw himself on the kitten and covered it with his body.
The hunter rode up and drove the dogs away. Then Vasya took the kitten home and never took him to the field again.
This story teaches kindness, responsibility, and protecting the weak.
It shows that people must care for those they have tamed. It also shows Vasya’s courage. He was not afraid of the dogs and rushed to protect the kitten.
