Hedgehogs belong to the subfamily Erinaceinae in the family Erinaceidae. The body length is about 20–30 cm, and the tail is about 3 cm. Typical weight is around 700–800 g. The small black ears are usually under 3.5 cm. A long muzzle ends with a moist black nose. On the upper jaw there are 20 small sharp teeth, and on the lower jaw there are 16 teeth. Each fore paw has 5 fingers with strong claws. The stiff body spines (needles) are about 2 cm long and hollow inside. Between the spines there is thin long hair on the head and belly. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and rest by day in a nest or other shelter. They can run up to 3 m/s and are good at swimming and jumping. Vision is poor, but the senses of smell and hearing are sharp. In cold weather European hedgehogs hibernate from October to April. Hedgehogs are omnivores that eat insects, caterpillars, slugs, earthworms, and sometimes mice. In nature they live about 3–5 years, and in captivity up to 8–10 years.
