The horse belongs to the family Equidae. An adult male is a stallion, and an adult female is a mare. A young horse is called a foal. Height is measured at the withers and is often about 140–170 cm. At full gallop a horse can reach about 70 km/hr. Horses have four natural gaits: walk, trot, canter, and gallop. The hard hoof protects the toe and can wear an iron horseshoe. Horses were fully domesticated over 5000 years ago. A mare’s gestation lasts about 11 months and usually results in one foal. Horses are herbivores that graze grass and eat hay and browse. Cutting incisors and strong molars help process tough plants. Excellent hearing and keen smell support wide-angle vision. Many horses live about 25–30 years. They communicate with neighs and whinnies and signal with the tail. Regular grooming and hoof care by a farrier keep them healthy.
