Elephants are the largest land mammals; African savanna males can reach a shoulder height of 3–4 m and a mass of 4–6 t. The trunk is a fusion of nose and upper lip with about 40,000 muscles. Flapping ears works like radiators to release body heat. Elephants communicate with low infrasonic calls (around 14–35 Hz) that travel kilometers. They can walk at about 25 km/hr and are strong swimmers, using the trunk as a snorkel. Family groups are led by an experienced matriarch; typical group size is 8–20. Elephants eat up to 150 kg of plants per day and may drink 100–200 liters of water. They shape ecosystems by knocking down trees, digging waterholes, and dispersing seeds. Their white tusks are elongated incisors that keep growing through life. Elephant feet have a soft cushion that spreads weight, letting them move quietly. The female’s gestation is about 22 months — one of the longest among mammals. Newborn calves usually weigh 90–120 kg and are cared for by several females (“allomothers”). Despite size, elephants sleep only about 2–4 hours a day in the wild. Average lifespan is 60–70 years. Main threats are poaching and habitat loss; strong conservation measures are essential.
