Rats belong to the family Muridae. The common genus is Rattus. There are more than 60 living species worldwide. Their ever-growing incisors must be worn down by gnawing. A long naked tail helps with balance and heat loss. The flexible front paws can grasp food like small hands. Whiskers are used for navigation in the dark. Typical body length is 20–28 cm without the tail. Adult body weight is usually 150–500 g. Usual running speed reaches about 13 km/hr. Rats are omnivores and adapt to many diets.
