Look at the picture. You can see a rabbit. Rabbits are small mammals in the biological family - Leporidae of the order - Lagomorpha (along with the hare and the pika (1)).
The rabbit has an oval body. It also has large ears that can be longer than 10 cm. It has dark eyes on both sides of its oval head with whiskers sticking out . Rabbit's fur, as a rule, is long and soft, with shades (2) of brown, gray and dark yellow. Its short tail is covered with fur. Rabbits have large, powerful hind (3) legs. On its front paws there are five fingers, whereas on the hind ones – four. It has a claw (4) on the end of each finger.
The size and weight of a rabbit strongly depend on the breed and varies from 2 to 10 kg. Although, there are rabbit specimens (5) whose weight reaches 25 kg.
Rabbits and rodents have a common ancestor (6).
Rabbits differ from hares. Rabbit cubs are born blind, without fur and are raised in burrows (7). Whereas hares are born covered with fur and with eyes open.
Almost all rabbits live in underground burrows that are often deep and complex (8). Hares live in simple nests located on the ground.
Hares are usually larger than rabbits, their ears are longer and they have black marks on their fur. Hares are near (9) impossible to tame (10), while rabbits can easily be house pets.
Rabbits hide from predators by digging holes or jumping away in a zigzag manner. If a rabbit is seized (11), it gives the predator a powerful kick with its hind legs. Sharp and strong teeth allow rabbits bite effectively, thus escaping a predator.
Rabbits are very prolific (12). One female can give birth up to 40 rabbits a year.
On average, rabbits live about 6 years, but, if they have good living conditions, they can live up to 9 years.
