Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal ruminant mammals. They belong to the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. In everyday usage the word sheep almost always refers to Ovis aries. Their eyes are placed laterally. The horizontally extended pupils give a wide field of view. The viewing angle is approximately 270–320°, so they can look back without turning the head. Sheep were domesticated more than eight thousand years ago. They are considered descendants of mouflons or urials. Males are called rams, and their offspring are called lambs. Sheep supply meat, wool, skins, milk and dairy products such as bryndza. These products are important for sustaining human life. Adult females usually weigh 45–100 kg, and large males 70–160 kg; a record ram reached 247.2 kg. The body length is cm 60–110. Sheep communicate by bleating, grunting, rumbling and snorting. In many religions the sheep symbolizes guidance, and in Christianity Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
