15 Интересных фактов о жирафе

The giraffe (Giraffa) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal. Because of its height, it has few natural enemies. Immediately after birth a calf reaches 1.8 m in height and weighs about 50 kg. In an hour it can firmly stand on its legs and start running after a few hours. Male giraffes can reach 5.56.1 m and their weight ranges 9001200 kg. Giraffes have only 7 cervical vertebrae like almost all mammals. In emergencies they can run up to 55 km/hr. These seemingly cumbersome animals can jump over barriers as high as 1.85 m. They are totally herbivorous; the main food is acacia. Every day a giraffe consumes about 30 kg of food and spends 16 to 20 hours a day eating. Among all mammals, giraffes need the least amount of sleep: from 10 minutes to 2 hours a day. On average, giraffes sleep 1.9 hours a day; they can sleep both standing and lying down. They communicate with each other at frequencies below 20 Hz which are indistinguishable to the human ear. If a predator dares to attack, a giraffe defends itself with the blows of the front hooves. Such a blow is capable of smashing the skull of a predator. Lions, leopards and hyenas usually attack young giraffes. In the wild their life expectancy is about 25 years; in captivity about 35 years.
