Deer belong to the family Cervidae. Adult males are called stags, and females are called hinds or does. The male grows hard bony antlers every year and sheds them in late winter. New antlers are covered with living velvet that feeds the growing bone. Deer are ruminants with a 4-chambered stomach. Young are fawns and usually have white spots for camouflage. Most species are crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk. During the autumn rut males compete and guard groups of females. Stags warn rivals with a deep bellow or by clashing antlers. A running deer can reach about 60 km/hr for short bursts. With a leap it can clear about 2–3 m in height. Deer live in forests, meadows, and open woodlands across Eurasia and North America. Their diet is mixed browse and grasses depending on the season. In the wild many species live around 10–15 years, and longer in captivity. In folklore the deer is a symbol of grace and renewal.
