Look at the picture. You can see a mole coming out of the soil. Its body is compact and covered with short velvety fur. A pink naked nose sits at the end of the snout. Its tiny eyes are almost hidden. Long whiskers stick out from the muzzle. Huge spade-like forelimbs point sideways. Each broad palm carries strong curved claws. Powerful shoulders push loose earth aside. The hind legs are small and tucked under the body. Its tail is short. The animal looks focused and ready to dig.

Moles belong to the family Talpidae. They are insect-eating insectivores among small mammals. Most species live underground in tunnel systems called runs. The front forelimbs are rotated outward for digging. An extra wrist bone forms a sixth thumb for power. Dense reversible fur can lie forward or backward so the mole backs up easily. The sensitive nose has touch organs called Eimer’s organs. Main food is earthworms and beetle larvae. A mole can eat up to 100 % of its body weight per day. They make surface mounds known as molehills. The tunnel network helps aerate soil and control pests. Breeding usually happens once a year in spring. Gestation lasts about 4–6 weeks. A litter often has 2–7 young. Average lifespan in the wild is around 3–4 years.
