Look at the picture. You can see a monkey. It looks similar to a human but it has some differences as well. Its body is covered with black hair. It has 2 big ears, 2 eyes, a nose and a mouth. Its forehead is low compared with a human’s one. It has a big mouth with a grey beard. It has 2 arms but they are longer than human ones. It has the same number of limbs as humans, but there are small differences. It has 2 legs that can be used as arms. Monkeys usually walk on their arms and legs. They are considered the cleverest animals.

Monkeys belong to the order Primates and are divided into 2 major groups: Old World and New World monkeys. New World species often have a prehensile tail that grips like a fifth hand, while Old World monkeys do not. Many Old World species have cheek pouches to store food. Most monkeys are omnivores and eat fruits, leaves, seeds, flowers, insects, and small animals. Typical troop size ranges from 5 to 50 individuals depending on species and habitat. They communicate with calls, facial expressions, and social grooming that strengthens bonds. Some species use tools: capuchins crack nuts with stones, and macaques wash or rinse food. Color vision is strong in Old World monkeys; in several New World species it is more limited. The female’s gestation lasts about 4–7 months. Most births are of 1 baby; 2 (twins) are common in marmosets and tamarins. Young ride on the mother’s back or belly and learn by play. Average wild lifespan is about 10–20 years, and in zoos some live over 30 years. They are agile climbers and jumpers; long tails help with balance. Main threats are habitat loss and illegal trade, so many species need active conservation.
