Look at the picture. You can see a rhinoceros walking on the plain. It is big and strong. Its skin is thick and folded like armor. It has 2 small eyes and large ears that turn to catch sounds. A massive head carries one or two horns. The front horn is longer; it curves slightly upward. It has a wide muzzle and a strong neck. Short pillar-like legs end in three-toed feet. A thin tail has a little tuft of hair. The animal looks calm but ready to charge if threatened.

Rhinoceroses are large herbivores in the order Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates); there are 5 living species: white and black (Africa), and Indian, Javan, Sumatran (Asia). Their horns are made of keratin — the same material as human hair and nails, not bone or ivory. Typical shoulder height of a white rhino is about 1.6–1.9 m, and weight reaches 1.8–2.7 t (big males can exceed 3.5 t). The front horn can grow up to about 1.5 m. Rhinos can run at around 50–55 km/hr for short bursts. They have poor eyesight but excellent smell and hearing.
The white rhino is a grazer with a wide, square lip; the black rhino is a browser with a pointed, prehensile upper lip for grasping twigs. Skin folds and very thick dermis protect the body; rhinos often wallow in mud to cool down and kill parasites. Feet have 3 toes with strong hoof-like nails. Rhinos are mostly solitary; a group is called a crash.
The female’s gestation lasts about 15–16 months; usually 1 calf is born. Calves may stay with the mother for up to 3 years. Average lifespan is 35–50 years depending on the species and conditions. Rhinos share a mutualism with oxpeckers (birds) that pick ticks and give alarm calls. Main threats are poaching for horn and habitat loss; strong conservation programs have rescued some populations.
