Anatoly Karpov was born on May 23, 1951, in Zlatoust, Russia. He learned to play chess when he was four years old. He loved the game and practiced a lot.
As a child, Karpov was very talented. He joined a famous chess school and quickly became one of the best young players in the Soviet Union.
In 1975, he became the World Chess Champion. He held this title for ten years and won many international tournaments. Karpov became a Grandmaster at the age of 19.
An interesting fact is that he played many famous matches against another great chess player, Garry Kasparov. Their rivalry is one of the most famous in chess history.
Karpov helped make chess popular around the world. He inspired many young players to learn and enjoy the game.
