Comment on the following statement:
| Some people believe that 'travel broadens the mind'. They believe that when you travel to other places, you experience new things and learn from them. Other people, however, argue that most people who go on holiday to other countries just lie on a beach for two weeks and don't experience the local culture at all. |
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement?
Some people believe that traveling broadens one’s mind, whereas others believe that it does not because all these travelers do is lie on a beach.
I think that traveling to other countries definitely broadens one’s mind. The only question is, to what extent, and that everyone has to decide for themselves. First of all, a lot of people travel specifically to learn more about new countries and their cultures. Second, they even learn new languages to get a better experience. If one’s goal for a trip is just relax on a beach and get a tan, one will learn country’s a culture only a little.
At the same time there are those who believe that some people do not experience the local culture at all. They stay in their hotels, go to the beach, eat in restaurants and that is it. Some of them do not even bother to learn how to say “thank you” in the country’s language.
I think these people have a point. Obviously, if a person does not want to experience the local culture, you can not force it upon him or her. At the same time, whether he wants it or not, he does experience it. He sees the architecture, the locals, how they are dressed and how they interact with each other. It is not a lot, but it is not nothing either.
In conclusion, I would like to say that traveling is one of the best and most pleasant things we have ever experienced. It is also a great way to learn about other cultures. I believe we should make the best of our trips abroad and learn as much as possible.
