Lynxes have a strong sense of smell, seven times better than a dog’s. They are the largest carnivores in their habitat. They can run up to 50 km/h despite their massive size. Lynxes use facial expressions to communicate. A lynx’s hibernation is not a true sleep but a state of reduced metabolic rate. Lynxes are excellent swimmers and can swim long distances. Though lynxes are carnivores, some species may also feed on berries and plants. Mother lynxes are extremely protective of their cubs. Lynxes have a powerful bite force. Lynxes can stand on their hind legs to get a better view. They have a layer of fur that keeps them warm during cold months. Some lynxes eat up to 20 pounds of food a day. Lynxes have black skin under their fur to absorb heat. Lynxes are known to be highly intelligent and resourceful. Their heart rate drops from 40–70 beats per minute to 8–12 during hibernation.
