CATBRIDGE — HISTORY STUDYING MATERIALS

Sumer

  • The earliest urban civilization in southern Mesopotamia (4th–3rd millennia BCE). City-states like Uruk and Ur built ziggurats, managed irrigation, and invented cuneiform writing. Laid the foundations of law, trade, and administration.

 

Akkad

  • The first Semitic empire of Mesopotamia under Sargon of Akkad (c. 2334–2154 BCE). Unified Sumerian city-states and spread the Akkadian language. Introduced imperial administration over a vast, multiethnic realm.

 

Babylon

  • Rose to prominence under Hammurabi (18th c. BCE) with his famous law code. The Neo-Babylonian era (7th–6th c. BCE) under Nebuchadnezzar II saw advances in astronomy and monumental architecture like the Ishtar Gate.

 

Assyria

  • A powerful Mesopotamian empire (9th–7th c. BCE) known for iron weaponry, siege warfare, and efficient administration. Capitals included Ashur and Nineveh; the empire fell in 612 BCE to a Babylonian–Median coalition.

 

Egyptian Civilization

  • Centered along the Nile with Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. Known for pyramids, hieroglyphs, and divine kingship of the pharaohs. The river’s annual flood sustained agriculture and a remarkably stable culture.

 

Indian Civilization

  • Begins with the Indus Valley (Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro), followed by the Vedic period. Sanskrit texts, early social orders, and the rise of Buddhism and Jainism; later empires like Maurya and Gupta shaped classical India.

 

Chinese Civilization

  • Developed along the Yellow River under the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Bronze casting, oracle bones, and the Mandate of Heaven formed core traditions; later unification under Qin laid groundwork for imperial China.
