Communication

In this day and age, there are many available methods of communication.

There are now several ways to open channels of communication with people on the other side of the world.

This means that I can be away from my parents, for example, for long periods of time

and I'm still able to keep in contact with them

and let them know that I'm OK by writing a postcard or a letter, which only takes a couple of days to get there,

or by making a telephone call.

I love receiving post from other people.

Just to get a word from my parents or friends that they're OK and that they're thinking about me can be so nice.

I wish I could get around to writing to others more often. For some reason, I seem to be very bad at actually getting round to writing letters and even if I write them,

sometimes it takes me weeks to put them in the post box.

Even though I know it's a good thing to stay in contact with people regularly,

I have a bit of an aversion towards writing,

as I often write things down and then realize afterwards that what I wrote was not really what I wanted to say, and I don't feel that I'm a very good communicator in this way.

I don't feel able to clearly and concisely put down my feelings onto paper,

and often I don't want to send letters that I've written because I'm worried that they will make the wrong impression.

I'd rather telephone,

but over long distances, of course, this can be very expensive,

so often I just don't get round to it.

I'm quite mad with myself because of this sometimes.

потому что очень часто потом я понимаю, что написал совсем не то, что хотел,

и думаю, что я плохо переписываюсь.

Я не могу четко и сжато излагать на бумаге свои чувства,

и часто я не хочу посылать письма, которые написал, потому что боюсь, что они произведут неправильное впечатление обо мне.

Я бы лучше позвонил,

но по межгороду, разумеется, это очень дорого,

так что я просто ничего не пишу

и из-за этого часто сержусь на себя.

However, sometimes, if I go on holiday somewhere,

I buy a few postcards and just write

"Hi, I'm on holiday and having a good time" and "Hope you're well" and then send them off.

The post is really such a handy form of communication. For me it's very useful.

For example, if I'm going to play with a group in Vienna,

I can send in advance a pile of music notes to the people there,

so they can practice and learn the music

and when I arrive,

we all know the tunes even though we haven't practiced together.

It's also so nice

if I want to show some of my friends some music that I really like, I can send cassettes in the post.

This is one of my favorite forms of communication, and sometimes if I want to show somebody how I'm feeling, instead of writing a long letter, I just send them a tape of some of my favorite music.

It's also, of course, such a joy for me to receive music in the post to listen to or learn.

Also, I like the idea that it's possible to send a video cassette to someone,

for example, in a different country.

Home video cameras are much more common these days,

and it's nice to make home videos of things that you've been doing and places where you've spent time and then send them to those that you love, to present a little bit of your life to them.

However, I think that home video cameras can be over-used a bit.

When I've been to a lot of places, for example to play music on the street,

it seems so many people are just walking around, viewing the world through their video camera, and thinking about everything as something to film and not experiencing it directly.

I'm not sure that this encourages people to have such a complete experience of a place.

если я хочу показать своим друзьям какую-то музыку, которая мне нравится, я могу послать по почте кассеты.

Это одна из моих любимых форм общения.

Порой, если я хочу кому-то высказать свои чувства, я не пишу длинных писем, а просто отправляю пленку с любимой музыкой.

Of course, there are other forms of communication, not only sending things in the post.

I know that now, by using computer networks,

it's possible for people to send messages to each other by E-mail,

from one computer to another computer,

and people can even sit and have on-line conversations, taking it in turns to send messages to each other, which take very little time to transfer.

I think this is something like a computer telephone, although I've only really heard about it and I haven't had any direct experience of it, so I can't say so much about it.

Конечно, есть и другие способы общения, кроме почты.

Я знаю, что сейчас с помощью компьютерных сетей можно посылать друг другу сообщения по электронной почте

с одного компьютера на другой,

и даже можно беседовать в режиме он-лайн,

по очереди посылая друг другу сообщения,

которые очень быстро приходят.

Это что-то вроде компьютерного телефона,

The telephone is something which

I've grown up with, as we always had a telephone in the house when I was a child. So it's really a part of life for me that I can, if I know somebody's number, pick up a telephone and attempt to get in touch with them instantly.

I think that many people's lives would be completely different if there were no telephones or instant means of communication.

I use it mostly to make arrangements with people these days.

I don't really have very long telephone conversations with friends,

I prefer to just use the telephone to arrange a meeting and then to be able to communicate face to face.

Of course, the deepest and the most complete form of communication is to meet with somebody, and I prefer this above all other types.

I know many people nowadays have mobile telephones so they can always be contacted,

if they keep their telephone switched on,

at any time of the day or night.

One of my friends, who works in Budapest but lives in a small village about 50 kilometers away,

was always very difficult to get in contact with,

as he never had a telephone at home

and was only in his office for two or three afternoons a week.

Now I know that I can ring him at any time of the day or night and he'll receive the call on his personal telephone.

I know, however, that these small mobile telephones are very expensive,

and that they have other disadvantages as well.

One of these is that when people use these extensively for business affairs, they can really spend all of their time in their business life

and they don't really stop to think about other things

and do other things when they finish work,

but are only engaged in some kind of negotiations from when they get up to when they go to bed at night.

I feel that these mobile telephones can be useful,

and can help people's lives,

but they have to know when to switch them off as well and to take a little bit of time each day when they can't be disturbed.

Я знаю многих людей, у которых есть мобильные телефоны, чтобы с ними можно было всегда связаться,

если у них он включен,

в любое время дня и ночи.

и могут помогать в жизни,

но надо также знать, когда их выключаить,

и иметь немного времени каждый день, когда тебя нельзя было побеспокоить.

Another form of communication is putting messages or advertisements in newspapers.

Last year, someone who didn't know me tried to contact me,

who'd only seen me playing in a festival in the summer and wanted to meet me and get to know me,

and she put an advertisement in the "Magyar Narancs" newspaper,

which has a small supplement every week full of small ads and personal columns,

and after seeing it in the newspaper, I got in contact with her and we met a few weeks later, and became friends afterwards.

В прошлом году со мной захотел познакомиться кто-то, кого я не знал,

кто только видел меня на фестивале летом, когда я выступал, и захотел познакомиться со мной.

Of course, communication isn't always between two individuals.

Sometimes a person can feel that they want to communicate something to a large number of people,

and there are ways of doing this, as well,

by writing articles for newspapers, making television programs or, closer to my own experience, by making musical recordings, cassettes, CD's, LP's or performances.

It can be a very satisfying feeling that you are creating something for an unknown audience.

As opposed to direct communication,

in this case you really have no control over the effect of what you've created.

It becomes an entity in itself,

and from the moment you publish it or release it,

it's out of your hands.

Maybe these texts are a good example of something like that, I don't know.

Конечно, общение не всегда происходит только между двумя людьми.

Иногда человеку хочется сказать что-то большой группе людей,

и для этого тоже есть свои способы,

написание статей в газете, программа на ТВ,

или, что ближе моему собственному опыту,

запись музыки на кассете, CD или пластинке, или выступление.

Иногда чувствуешь удовлетворение от того, что создаешь что-то для неизвестной публики.

В противоположность прямому общению

вы здесь не можете контролировать эффект, который производите.

Это становится самостоятельным произведением,

и с момента выхода произведения в свет,

оно вне вашего контроля.

Возможно, и эти тексты хороший тому пример, не знаю.

Communication

At Christmas, the post office queues are like hell on earth.

It's impossible to send any letters,

nothing arrives on time.

I think post offices all over the world

suffer from the same nightmare.

Whichever queue you stand in will always be the longest queue,

it doesn't matter which country you are in.

It's just as bad in Hungary as in England.

It's the same everywhere, I imagine.

I haven't been to a country yet where the post office system or the queuing system seems to work.

It's getting a lot better now in Hungary these days, I think.

It takes a much shorter time for letters to arrive, but there is a problem with parcels, as they often don't arrive in Hungary.

В Рождество очереди на почте просто адские.

Невозможно послать письма,

и ничего не приходит вовремя.

По-моем, почты всего мира

страдают от этого кошмара.

В какую бы вы очередь ни встали, она оказывается самой длинной,

Post is quite good value here.

If you send something by airmail,

it's the same price,

and to send a postcard is the same price for anywhere in the world.

In England, it's slightly different,

as there are different rates for Europe and America.

Почта в Венгрии хороша.

Если посылать что-то авиапочтой,

то цена одинакова,

и послать открытку в любую страну мира стоит одинаково.

В Англии немного по-другому,

так как цены для Европы и Америки разные.

I like writing letters.

I'm not as good as I used to be,

because I have to write for my job,

and I get a bit bored with writing all day

and don't often want to come home and write long letters.

I quite often type letters to my mum on the computer nowadays,

and I have an old typewriter at home now.

It's quite funny. I type letters to her which are full of typing mistakes.

She says it makes them more amusing.

I like writing postcards.

If I go on holiday anywhere, I write lots of postcards.

I once went to Moscow and I think I wrote 50 postcards,

and one Christmas here I wrote about 60 home,

but I hardly got any back

so I stopped that because it just became too outrageously expensive.

Мне нравится писать письма.

Сейчас, правда, меньше, чем раньше,

потому что по работе мне приходиться много писать, и мне надоедает делать это весь день, и не хочется приходить домой и снова писать длинные письма.

We had E-mail at work when I was working at a newspaper.

My brother in Hong Kong sent me some E-mail.

I'm still not sure how it works.

It just seems like it's sending messages through the telephone line onto somebody else's computer.

I don't really understand why it took such a long time to get off the ground.

It seems such an easy thing to do.

Why didn't they do it before?

У нас на работе в газете была электронная почта.

I like sending faxes to friends.

I like drawing things.

For my work I have to send official faxes in Hungarian

and that's quite difficult,

as they have this really strange official language.

You can't just write "Oh, hi there.

Send me the information, bye".

You have to write a whole essay,

which is not really the point of faxes.

They're supposed to be a quick memo to somebody,

but they don't seem to have cottoned on to this aspect of them here.

Я люблю посылать друзьям факсы.

Люблю рисовать.

По работе мне приходится рассылать официальные факсы на венгерском языке,

а это очень трудно,

потому что официальный язык в Венгрии очень странный.

Нельзя просто написать: "Здравствуйте.

что не характерно для факсов.

Они должны служить коротким напоминанием,

но здесь, похоже, до этого еще не додумались.

In the West, I think we take it for granted

that everybody has a telephone.

I didn't realise how difficult it is here for people to get them.

You have to be on a waiting list for many years,

and in some places they just don't have the necessary network installed,

so you can't get one anyway

even if you are prepared to wait and pay.

I know some people in the fancy district,

the second district, who still can't get hooked up with a telephone,

so they have to have radio phones.

На Западе мы считаем само собой разумеющимся,

что у всех есть телефон.

Я не знала, что здесь для людей это может быть такой проблемой.

Можно годами простоять в очереди на его установку. А в некоторых местах совсем нет телефонных линий

и нельзя никак установить телефон,

Mobile phones seem really popular in Hungary.

They're some kind of status symbol I think.

Some people get really annoyed I think when they hear them on the bus or in the pub

and somebody's talking to a piece of plastic, and they seem to take it personally and get really angry,

but it doesn't really bother me.

Some of them are funny 'cos they have a kind of jingle .

Instead of ringing normally, they play a tune,

which I think is quite embarrassing.

I was in a supermarket queue the other day

and a telephone went off and played a whole tune,

and the guy whose phone it was just stood there and went bright red as everyone turned round and looked at him.

He was trying to find his radio telephone to turn it off

and finally he got to it,

but everyone knew it was him by then.

Мобильные телефоны, кажется, очень популярны в Венгрии.

The telephone system in Hungary is quite unique.

You can call the right number, not misdial and you still get a completely different number,

and get through to somebody that you never intended to.

Somehow between your telephone number and your friend's telephone number,

there is a hitch in the line

and it just misdirected completely.

It can be quite unnerving

sometimes as you think

"Oh no, I'm going mad.

I dialed the right number,

I'm sure I dialed the right number",

and then you get the same angry pensioner guy again and again,

or you wake up somebody in the morning and it's not the person you wanted to call,

and you call again,

really concentrating to get the right number,

and it's still a different number.

I think one must realize that it's not the person dialing being totally stupid,

it's the system.

I don't know how it happens.

It seems there are Gremlins in the machines.

Телефонная система в Венгрии совершенно уникальна.

Можно точно набрать нужный номер, не ошибиться, но, тем не менее, попасть совершенно в другое место,

к тому, кто вам совершенно не нужен.

Каким-то образом между телефоном вашего друга и вашим телефоном

происходит переадресовка звонка,

и он уходит совсем в другое место.

Иногда это просто бесит.

Ты думаешь:

"Нет, я сошла с ума.

Я набрала правильно номер,

я уверена, что набрала правильно номер",

но, снова и снова, попадаешь к тому же сердитому пенсионеру,

или будишь кого-то утром, а это не тот, кому ты звонил,

ты звонишь снова,

тщательно набираешь каждую цифру,

но все равно попадаешь не туда.

Мне кажется, надо понять, что набирающий не полный идиот,

это такая система.

Не знаю, как это получается.

Похоже, в телефонах поселились Гремлины.

It's great that I can dial straight through to my mum,

or anywhere in the world from Hungary now.

It's something we really take for granted.

It's amazing that I can just dial Australia,

and the signal will go by satellite or under the sea and you're talking to the person as if they're in the next room.

There's often a clearer line when I talk to my mum in London, in England

than when I'm talking to someone on the other side of Budapest.

That happens in England as well.

Talking to someone in the next street,

the line can be worse quality

than when talking to somebody on the other side of the world.

Прекрасно, что я могу прямо позвонить маме

или в любое другое место мира из Венгрии.

Мы это воспринимаем, как само собой разумеющееся. А ведь удивительно, что я запросто могу набрать Австралию,

и сигнал пойдет через спутник или под морем, и ты будешь разговаривать с человеком, как будто он в соседней комнате.

Когда я разговариваю отсюда с мамой, которая в Лондоне, линия чище,

чем когда я разговариваю с кем-то на другом конце Будапешта.

В Англии такое тоже происходит.

При разговоре с соседом по улице,

линия может быть хуже,

чем если ты разговариваешь с кем-то на другом конце света.

I don't actually like talking on the telephone much.

I prefer to see the person I'm talking to,

but if I have to, I can.

When I'm working,

if I'm doing an interview,

I much prefer to do it in person than on the phone.

It's much more nerve-wracking and difficult to think of questions when you can't see the person, especially if you have to conduct the interview in another language.

Я не люблю много говорить по телефону.

Я предпочитаю видеть человека, с которым говорю, но когда нужно, я могу:

или беру интервью,

я предпочитаю делать это лично, а не по телефону.

Having worked for newspapers for quite some time, it's really interesting to see how they work, how you put a newspaper together,

and all the stress and anguish

and creativity that goes into putting it out.

I have not worked for daily newspapers

as a staff reporter.

I contribute to them,

but I'm not there when they put them together.

Я проработала в газетах долго,

как все суетятся и волнуются,

I've only worked for weekly newspapers,

which is not nearly as highly charged as working for a daily,

but people still get really agitated at a weekly news deadline time.

It's interesting seeing how the reporter writes a story

and then it goes to the editor,

who usually rewrites it,

and then it goes to the copy editor,

who rewrites it again.

Then it goes to the production staff,

and they try to fit it into the space available

so they chop bits out as well.

Then, if there's a really big picture,

they have to chop more bits out

and you see your article completely transformed

by the time it reaches the page.

I like working with photographers.

I like working in a visual way,

seeing how you can match the story to the pictures and vice versa .

Я работала только в еженедельниках,

там платят меньше, чем в ежедневной газете,

но люди все равно нервничают, когда наступает время сдачи материала.

Интересно наблюдать, как репортер пишет статью,

а потом она поступает к редактору,

который обычно ее переписывает,

Потом она идет к выпускающему редактору, и там ее пытаются втиснуть в имеющееся свободное место, и там от нее отрезают кусочки.

А если там большая фотография, то

приходится отрезать от статьи еще немного,

и ваша статья изменяется до неузнаваемости

к моменту появления в газете.

Мне нравится работать с фотографами.

Я люблю работать визуально,

смотреть, подходит ли фото к статье или нет.

I've been reading newspaper advertisements recently,

as I've been looking for a computer.

It's quite difficult. I remember looking for a flat in Budapest

the first time I came here, in the "Express".

That's really difficult. You have to get up first thing in the morning.

It's quite a difficult business finding one,

then visiting the place. Some of them don't exist.

Недавно я читала объявления в газете,

потому что искала компьютер.

Все это очень сложно. Помню, как я искала в Будапеште квартиру,

когда впервые приехала туда, искала в газете "Экспресс".

Это очень трудно. Надо встать рано утром.

Очень трудно найти квартиру,

I think dating columns are good,

but I'd never use one myself.

I don't know why.

I'm sure they work for some people,

but I just can't imagine that the person that I would like to meet would be the sort of person who would use one, if you see what I mean.

I'm sure they work.

I know people who've met their partners or made lifelong friends through personal columns, but quite often, people just put them in as a joke

and it can lead to misunderstandings.

Мне кажется, частные объявления хороши,

но я бы ими никогда не воспользовалась.

Не знаю почему.

I have some friends who don't have telephones,

and it can be really difficult to make arrangements with them.

It can be very frustrating,

as you have to arrange things beforehand,

and often if you work in journalism,

things come up at the last minute,

things you haven't anticipated

and you have to put off going out to work late.

You can't let people know that you won't be there if they don't have a phone, so it's tricky.

In these situations, you certainly realize how useful telephones are.

Some people also have pagers,

where just a message comes up on a little beeper and then you call in and get the message and call the person,

and I think that's a really good idea.

Doctors often have them,

especially when they're on call 24 hours a day.

У меня есть друзья, у которых нет телефонов, и с ними бывает очень трудно договариваться о чем-то.

Это иногда просто убивает,

потому что все надо обговорить заранее,

а в журналистской работе часто в последнюю минуту

возникает что-то срочное, чего ты не предвидел, и ты откладываешь выход на работу на позднее время.

The Internet seems really good fun.

I was working today on an Apple.

It had a colour monitor, and it was just wonderful.

After an old typewriter, it seems like heaven to work on it.

It's so easy and quick, to open up applications,

and do all sorts of things that you just cannot do on a typewriter.

You can shift text around

and put things in different files

and change the lettering styles

and the size of the fonts and everything.

It's great.

When you have these more complicated systems, you can do all sorts of things.

I like drawing on the computer as well,

that's quite good fun.

I've had quite a few articles on the Internet.

I don't really understand how the copyright rules work on the Internet.

I've never seen any money for it -

I've never been paid.

I think people can just take something off the Internet and you never know

unless you see it in a hard copy somewhere,

in a newspaper.

It's available all over the world.

If somebody wants to log onto it

and download whatever you've written,

then there's no way you can find out.

I think maybe everything on it is free.

Сегодня я работала на компьютере "Эпл".

У него цветной монитор, и было просто здорово.

После старой пишущей машинки работать на компьютере - настоящий рай.

Так легко и просто запускать программы

и делать всякие вещи, которые просто отсутствуют на машинке.

Можно перемещать текст,

раскладывать его по разным файлам,

менять стили

и размеры шрифтов, и все прочее.

Просто замечательно.

Когда у вас сложные системы, вы можете делать всякие вещи.

Мне нравится также рисовать на компьютере, это весело.

Я написала несколько статей для Интернета. Я не знаю, как там работает авторское право,

я никогда не получала никаких денег за это,

мне никто не платил.

По-моему, люди просто берут что-то из Интернета и вы ничего об этом не узнаете,

пока где-нибудь не увидите свой труд на бумаге, в газете, например.

Интернет доступен всему миру.

Если кто-то захочет подключиться

и "скачать" то, что ты написал,

то у тебя не будет никакой возможности узнать об этом. Наверное, все на Интернете бесплатно.
