Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. is an American actor, producer, and director. Robert was born on August 17, 1943.

His great-grandfather Giovanni di Niro emigrated to America from Italy. The preposition "di" turned into "De" by mistake of the US immigration service.

Robert De Niro Sr. was a famous sculptor and abstractionist-artist. He met the artist Virginia Admiral, and in 1942 married her. A year later, they had a son, Robert but when he was two years old, the couple divorced.

Robert De Niro grew up in the streets of the Greenwich Village and Little Italy neighborhoods of Manhattan. Because of Robert's light skin tone he was called "Bobby Milk."

At the age of 10, De Niro's artistic debut took place. He played the role of the cowardly (1) Lion in his school's stages production  of "The Amazing Wizard of Oz". Later Robert entered the "High School of Music and Art" in Manhattan. This was the same school where Al Pacino studied.

De Niro studied with Stella Adler where he learned about the Stanislavski system of acting techniques. This system encouraged (2) him to explore (3) both internal (4) and external (5) character aspects to fully realize any character he portrayed (6).

De Niro's first major film role was in the sports drama "Bang the Drum Slowly" (1973) which brought him instant (7) recognition  (8).

To achieve authenticity (9) of the acting, Robert took boxing lessons for the film "Raging Bull", ground (10) his teeth down for "Cape Fear", learned to play the saxophone for "New York, New York", and worked as a cab driver for 3 months for “Taxi Driver”.

De Niro had a pivotal (11) role in the Francis Ford Coppola film "The Godfather Part II" (1974) where he played the young Vito Corleone. De Niro became the first actor to win an Academy Award who spoke mainly a non English language.

Another notable (12) performance was in the film “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984). After this film, filmmakers and producers begin to exploit (13) De Niro’s characters in three basic ways: a criminal, a cop and a demonic villain (14).

De Niro married his first wife, Diahnne Abbott, in 1976, an actress and singer. De Niro also adopted Abbott's daughter Drena De Niro. They divorced in 1988. De Niro has a twin sons Aaron Kendrick and Julian Henry de Niro from a long relationship with the former (15) model Toukie Smith. In 1997, De Niro married his second wife, actress Grace Hightower. Their son Elliot was born in 1998 and the couple split (16) in 1999.
