About Kostya Tszyu (краткие биографические сведения)

Konstantin Borisovich Tszyu is the first world champion in professional boxing from Russia and an Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.

Kostya Tszyu was born on September 19, 1969 in the town of Serov, Sverdlovsk region. Kostya’s father, Boris Timofeevich was a metallurgist. His mother, Valentina Vodimirovna was a nurse. Konstantin got his surname from his great-grandfather Innokentiy, who was a Korean who came to Russia from China.

Kostya started visiting a local boxing gym at the age of 9. As a child, Kostya was hyperactive, so his father decided to take him to a boxing gym, where he would channel that energy by fighting older boys.

During his amateur sports career, Kostya became the world boxing champion at the Goodwill Games in 1991. Earlier he became the champion of Europe in 1989 and 1991.

In 1991, he won the World Cup in Sydney.

Konstantin’s performance at the World Championships in Sydney impressed the Australian coach Johnny Lewis and the promoter Bill Mordy. They invited him to come to Australia and start a professional career.

Kostya needed only 15 fights to win the IBF (International Boxing Federation) title.

Many former opponents noted the power of Kostya’s punches. Despite his lighter welterweight status, Tszyu punches like a light heavyweight. Kostya gradually won the WBC, IBF, WBA belts to become an undisputed world champion boxer in 2001.

At the age of 35 he finished his professional career and became a coach.

Kostya graduated from the Ural State University with Honors and received his Ph.D. from the Department of Physical Education of the Tyumen State University.

Konstantin Tszyu developed his methods of training professional boxers, which he successfully used for several years, living in Australia. Returning to Russia, Konstantine began giving his master classes regularly, where he demonstrates his methods of training.

On June 12, 2011 Kostya Tszyu was the first boxer from Russia to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as a person who has made a huge contribution to the development of boxing. On the same day the American, Mike Tyson, and actor and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone were given the same honor.

From 2012 to 2013 Kostya coached professional boxers such as Alexander Povetkin, Denis Lebedev and Khabib Allakhverdiev.
