Lady in the Moon

The children were excited. It was Moon Festival time. Grandma Wang had come to stay.

Biff, Chip and Kipper had never seen moon cakes. "Try a bit," said Grandma.

Kipper did not like it. He put it in his pocket.

"What is the Moon Festival?" asked Biff.

"It's when the moon is biggest and brightest," said Jiabin.

"The full moon brings happiness," said Grandma. "It's when families get together."

Jiabin and Lee put on a shadow play.

"It's the legend of the Moon Festival," said Jiabin.

"Hou Yi won a special liquid. It was the elixir of life."

The elixir would let him live forever.

"Nobody must find it," Hou Yi told his wife, Chang'e. "Hide the bottle."

Wicked Pang Meng made Chang'e get the bottle.

"Give it to me," Pang Meng said.

Instead, Chang'e drank it all.

Chang'e floated up to the moon to live forever.

Forever after, Hou Yi looked sadly up at the full moon.

"What a sad story!" said Kipper.

"But it's a happy one, too," said Grandma.

"We look at the moon and think of the people we love."

The next day Biff, Chip and Jiabin made lanterns with Grandpa Chen.

Jiabin's mum hung the lanterns up.

"They look beautiful," said Lin.

It was time to go out and look at the moon.

"Look at the lanterns in the park," said Biff.

"They look beautiful too."

"Look at the moon in my telescope," said Grandpa.

Chip looked first and he was amazed.

Kipper looked next and gasped.

"I can see Chang'e on the moon," he said.

"It's a trick," said Grandpa.

"The end of my telescope has a picture of Chang'e on it."

"What a clever trick!" said Biff.

"Now I will remember the legend every time I see the full moon."

It was time to eat.

"What a lot of food," said Biff. "It all looks wonderful."

"I can't wait," said Kipper. "I'm hungry. I didn't eat my moon cake."

"We miss you, Mum, Dad and Gran," said Biff.

"We wish you were here. The Moon Festival is wonderful."
