Vietnamese Cinderella
Tấm and Cám (a Vietnamese Cinderella)
Once there lived two girls: gentle Tấm and her jealous stepsister Cám. One day their stepmother sent them to catch fish. While Tấm worked hard, Cám tricked her and stole all her fish. Tấm cried until a small, shining fish appeared and became her friend. The stepmother discovered it and secretly cooked the fish. Heartbroken, Tấm buried the bones. From the spot grew a magical tree that gave her a beautiful dress and slippers. When the king held a festival, Tấm wished to go. The tree dressed her in silk, and she dropped a tiny slipper on the way. The king searched the land; only Tấm’s foot fit. He married her, and she became queen. Envious, the stepmother and Cám plotted and harmed Tấm. Through many trials—and with the help of kind spirits—Tấm returned, wiser and stronger. The king recognized her, and justice came to the cruel ones. Tấm and the king lived in peace.
